SAQA's Portfolio, the art quilt sourcebook, is the go-to resource for galleries, museum directors, architects, interior designers, and collectors considering art quilts for their exhibitions and collections. It's a wonderful opportunity for SAQA professional artist members (PAMs) to showcase their work. Portfolio 19 will be published in both print and electronic versions, broadening the opportunities for exposure to the art world and to the public.

Eligibility

Members with PAM status as of April 1, 2012, are eligible to participate in Portfolio 19.

If you are not currently a PAM,

you can apply for PAM status before March 7.

Submissions will be accepted online April 1-30, 2012. You will be asked to provide information about yourself and your piece and to upload one digital image.

SYNTHESIS II Exhibition Opens at Greenwood Gallery in Guelph

We are pleased to announce that our SAQA Central Canada Exhibition, Synthesis II, has opened at the Greenwood Gallery in Guelph. The Gallery is located in the Greenwood Quiltery, 275 Woolwich Street, Guelph. Synthesis II is a unified and dynamically diverse show, and designated as a travelling SAQA exhibition that combines the work of 16 Canadian members of Studio Art Quilt Associates. SAQA is an international organization of artists, curators, gallery owners and collectors with over 2000 members.

Each work of the Synthesis II exhibit meets the SAQA definition of an art quilt: a contemporary artwork exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the whole range of visual arts: painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design, assemblage and sculpture, which retains, through materials or techniques, a clear relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descends.

The selection process for Synthesis II took place in October 2011 by jurors: Yvonne Wiegers, Artist, Professor of Visual Art at Heritage College, Ottawa, Ontario; Sharon Godwin, Director at Thunder Bay Gallery, Thunder Bay, Ontario; and Lyndal Osborne, Artist, Professor Emeritus in Department of Art and Design, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta. The twenty juried works chosen reflect a skillful integration of diverse concepts into a mixed media fusion of colours, textures, and energy. Each stands on its own as an art work and as a synthesis of the materials and thoughts of each individual artist.

The SAQA Central Canada group piece, LAURENTIAN HILLS, created by 20 members in 2010 is also being shared with the visitors to Greenwood Gallery during this exhibition and will not travel with the Synthesis II Exhibition, yet may be seen together with Synthesis II at some Gallery locations as space allows.

JO FITSELL MARBLING WORKSHOP IN MOUNT DORA, FLORIDA

Workshop One: Marbling with Jo Fitsell
Friday, January 27 - 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Marbling is an ancient technique remastered and made easier by teacher, Jo Fitsell. Students will play with color by floating paints on the surface of thickened water and then picking up the paint with either fabric or paper. You will be amazed at how quickly the intense colors transfer and the pure joy of spontaneously creating! Students leave this workshop with yards of finished fabric suitable for collage, quilting or clothing. More details »

O CANADA 2012 Exhibition Call to Entry posted

The International Quilt Festival has posted their Call To Entry for a special exhibit which will showcase Canadian Quilts and Quilt Artists, O CANADA 2012. The exhibition is open to Canadian quilters and you MUST live in a Canadian Province in order to be eligible for this competition. Quilts may be traditional or art quilts, and all quilts made by residents of Canada will be considered. The special exhibit will open in the IQF Cincinnati Festival location and works may travel throughout the US at IQF locations during 2012 as determined by the organization. Quilts not chosen to travel will be returned by the end of May 2012.

You will find the Call to Entry details posted at the following website link. Please take time to have a look. Each entrant may submit a total of two entries for consideration. As 2011 winds down a peaceful week for visiting friends and family, we extend a warm wish for an exciting and productive New Year to each of our SAQA Central Canada members. This has been an exciting year as members work was accepted into a number of prestigious exhibitions both in Canada and internationally. A number of you have mounted either Solo or Collaborative Shows which have been attended by many Canadians as well as visitors from the US and beyond. Congratulations to each of you. It is exciting to see that you are persevering in your goals, entering competitions and answering Calls to Entry.

In the New Year, SAQA Central Canada is very pleased to know that our SYNTHESIS II travelling exhibit will be making it's way first to Greenwood Gallery in Guelph and then on to the prestigious Homer Watson House Gallery and John M. Parrott Gallery in Belleville as the year progresses. Special thanks to each member who met the challenge to enter this Juried Show competition and congratulations to those whose work will travel and be enjoyed by many in the coming months. We so appreciate all of the work that our SYNTHESIS II Organizing Committee took on before the actual Jury process. Special thanks to Cathy Breedyk-Law and Pat Caffery, our Exhibition Curators and their teams of contributing members, as well as to Ann Bird who managed the collection of the entries and moving them out to the Jury members for their selection of the final entries that will travel over the next several years.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

SAQA Central Canada Representative, Dwayne Wanner, has organized a meeting for the SAQA Western Ontario Group to be held on January 25, 2012 at the home of member, Barbara Chapman in Oakville. The meeting is scheduled from 1:00 to 3:00 pm and luncheon will be a sandwich buffet. Members are asked to arrive at Barbara's home at 2296 Hixon Street, between Bronson and Third Line between 11:30 am and 12 noon. Eastern Ontario Group News

Our Regional Meeting on November 29th was attended by sixteen members and guests. Discussion centred around the ongoing work of the Synthesis II Committee and planning for the new year, including encouragement of members to take advantage of all of the many benefits of their membership in SAQA. We are pleased to welcome our new SAQA Eastern Ontario Group members including Joanne Batchelor and four members Mary Andrews Minigan, Nancy Gall, Janine Gates and Diana Hogan who joined SAQA after attending the November 29th meeting.

National SAQA Board of Directors member, Mary Pal, shared greetings from the Board and news of the upcoming IDENTITY: Context and Reflection Joint Conference of SAQA/SDA in Philadelphia, PA in March of 2012. Several members have registered and plan to take in not only the three day conference March 30-April 1st, but attend the three-day courses with renowned International Instructors as well. There is still time to register for the conference and courses. Please visit the SAQA website for the links and information.

We look forward to seeing many of you at our Regional Meetings, as you enter your new work to the many SAQA Exhibitions and as a goal, upgrade your membership to PAM Status and become eligible for inclusion in the Annual Portfolio of SAQA artists' work. Quilts of Denmark - and Workshops - in Ailsa Craig in May

This year, the Ailsa Craig Community Quilt Festival plays host to Quilts of Denmark from May 1st to 5th, 2012. There will be 16 Danish quilters, 100-plus quilts and, we hope, many visitors. We are at the moment travelling the province doing trunk shows with 8 Danish quilts and samples of the workshops that are being taught. I have, in fact, had one workshop completely sell out, and we still have at least another 20 trunk shows to go!

We will have 4 Danish teachers, Charlotte Yde, Lisbet Borrgreen, Bettina Andersen and Karin Ostergaard. All details of the workshops offered can be found on our website. The cost of all the workshops is $95 plus HST and we have one evening class which is $60 plus HST.

Ailsa Craig is about an hour northwest of London.

I would love to welcome any SAQA member who would like to come, and if anyone would like to volunteer to be a Quilt Angel, we would be delighted to have you. It is Jane's and my wish that the Angels are quilters who understand how to handle quilts and we will not be handing out out white gloves to the general public.

We will be arranging a quilt airing in the town the Sunday before the show opens, and a pot luck supper that evening; all are welcome. There will also be a closing banquet on May 5th after the show closes.

The contemporary art-quilts of East St. Louis, Illinois artist Edna J. Patterson-Petty are improvisational and 'jazzy' in their aesthetic quality. They function as conveyors of memories and histories of place – slavery, race and racism, community and self-emancipation. The quilts in this exhibition not only speak about adversity, they are testaments of the inventiveness of African-American culture as expressed in the syncopated jazz beat.

A consummate recycler, Patterson-Petty creates her colourful art out of scraps of cotton and silk fabrics, old clothing, organic and non-organic materials found primarily around her home. In her quilts, Patterson-Petty fuses traditional quilt-making techniques from European, African-American and African cultures and extends them to produce visual narratives that employ a distinct appliqué collage aesthetic. The quilts seem to go against the grain of the rigid geometric structure associated with traditional quilts. They are pictorial compositions that are infused with histories, as well as collective stories about the current socio-political moment.

Seen together, the works in Edna Patterson-Petty: African-American Contemporary Quilts provide us with an encounter with African-American experiences and stories told through her spirited improvisational process of remaking and refashioning.

Heather has recently had her work accepted into two juried shows.

Are you familiar with the Montreal fibre group Diagonale? They are located at 5455 de Gaspé, suite 203, and are partially supported by public funds.

"For the seventh consecutive year, DIAGONALE is holding its annual year end fundraiser-exhibition. Over one hundred fifty artists have responded generously to the call for JAUNE, to support the center and to promote contemporary fiber arts. The original works of these artists will be up for silent auction. Half the proceeds will go directly to the artists and the other half will go to the center as donations. Collectors, art lovers, and anyone curious to see these works are invited to come see what fibres has to offer!"

The works will be on display at the gallery on Friday, Dec. 2, noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday Dec. 3, noon - 3 p.m., when the silent auction ends.

Also, Heather is pleased to have had two pieces accepted to the "New Collection 2012" at Stewart Hall in Pointe Claire, located at 126 Bord-du-Lac in Pointe Claire. This beautiful old mansion is the city's cultural centre, and is located on the shores of Lake St.-Louis. The pieces on display are for sale, and all work that doesn't sell at the show is made available to the public for one year, through their rental gallery. A wide variety of media will be featured.

Dates of the show are November 26 - January 22. The vernissage is at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 27.

REGIONAL MEETING DATE APPROACHING FAST - WILL YOU JOIN US?

As a reminder, please mark your calendar today and plan to attend the upcoming November 29th Regional Meeting for our SAQA Central Canada group - everyone is welcome. We are hearing that some members missed the suggested November 15th RSVP date established to get a feel for whether the hall rental was appropriate, and are unsure about whether they can attend - ABSOLUTELY! It is so important to have many regional members with us, and the hall we have secured will hold a large group, so please feel free to bring a friend that you feel might benefit from an introduction to SAQA and all of it's benefits. Fibre Artists and Quilters from all areas of experience and interest are most welcome.

The details about the meeting are in the post immediately below this one, and a Google Maps link is included. The drive is an easy one from areas all across southeastern Ontario, and yes, we know it will not likley be possible to have members from long distances with the timing in November, but please consider the advantages of a trip to Kingston area. The shopping is wonderful here, so make it a special trip with friends. Opportunities abound for a quick visit downtown Kingston (just 15 minutes from Odessa), or the hub of shopping in west end Kingston just 10 minutes from the meeting site.

Please plan to arrive for a 10:30 am START of the meeting. Bethany will be at the hall by 9:30 am for keen visitors wishing a bit of time to relax with friends. We will share our usual potluck lunch and there is refrigeration and several lovely stoves at the hall. Coffee and tea, and water provided. After lunch, several of our terrific members will share some techniques and new tools to inspire your creativity.

Don't forget your new work, as we all love to see what YOUR studio time is producing. Our "Creative Buffet" sharing of work is a favourite feature at our Regional meetings. Looking forward to seeing many of you on Tuesday, November 29th at the Odessa Fairgrounds Hall. This is YOUR time to meet and network with SAQA members from Ontario, so do plan to come enjoy the day. Invitation to members in Toronto and Southwestern Ontario

To all of our members located in the Toronto area and the areas west of the city, this is a special invitation to contact Regional Representative, DWAYNE WANNER and chat with him about your needs, any special opportunities to gather in a Regional Meeting format and to advise if you are aware of a meeting location that would accommodate SAQA Central Canada members in the city or to the west of Toronto. It is so important to make opportunities available for all members and we understand that a drive to the Perth, Ottawa or Kingston area is just simply impossible for many of members.

We have 22 active members who are in this Southwestern block in and around Toronto, including areas west of the city. SAQA has been very supportive in their recruitment of three SAQA Central Canada Regional Representatives for the new year. This will afford more coverage, a wider representation of our members and the opportunity for Regional Reps to meet with everyone. Can you help??

Dwayne would like to hear from each of you, sharing your willingness to travel to a meeting set up within a reasonable drive for each of you, perhaps in Oakville or Toronto area. Should you be able to volunteer to host a meeting in your studio, or have a meeting room available in your area that would accommodate approximately 20-25 members, please drop Dwayne an email or call him to share that information. All suggestions and feedback are welcome.

We hope that you can help make the next Regional meeting a possibility in YOUR area, and encourage the sharing of SAQA news, exhibition opportunities and hopefully for many of you, to plan participation in the upcoming "IDENTITY: CONTEXT and REFLECTION" joint Conference of SAQA/SDA on March 29-April 1st, 2012.

SAQA Central Group to meet November 29, 2011 at Odessa Fairgrounds Hall

The SAQA Central Canada Group will meet on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at the Odessa Fairgrounds Hall located in the Village of Odessa just west of Kingston. Every member is welcome and encouraged to attend, and to bring a friend who you might feel is interested in SAQA membership. The meeting will be hosted by SAQA Regional Representative, Bethany Garner, and will begin with Business Meeting at 10:30 am to allow for travel time by members coming from a distance. Please plan to participate in our "Creative Buffet" sharing during the late morning, as we so enjoy seeing YOUR new work.

Agenda items are welcome from all members. Please forward to Bethany at garner@kingston.net no later than November 15th. Pat Caffery, SYNTHESIS II Curator, will have a report for all of us to share the latest news about the "next steps" for our exciting Exhibition.

Discussion about future meeting dates/venues will be at the top of the list. Your input is very important and we encourage members who are willing to host a regional meeting to please advise your Regional Representatives: Sharon Collins, Dwayne Wanner or Bethany Garner.

After the am meeting, please join us as we share a members-provided POTLUCK LUNCH at 12:30 pm (coffee/tea/water provided), followed by an afternoon of visiting and moving through a few techniques demonstrations shared by local members. We hope you will be able to stay throughout the afternoon if at all possible. A small "donation" to help cover the hall rental will be appreciated.

DIRECTIONS: The Odessa Fairgrounds Hall is located just south of the Odessa exit off Highway 401, and a quick drive from 401 to the stop lights in the village. Proceed south through the lights and the entrance to the Fairgrounds property will be on your left about one city block past the stop lights. Parking is available next to the "Palace" (white Barn with a red roof) building on your left as you enter the Fairgrounds property. The meeting will be held in the meeting hall attached to the rear of the building and with a ramped, accessible entrance. This exhibition includes 82 quilts by 74 artists from across the United States, as well as Canada and Japan. This annual exhibit, now in its 31st year, has become a tradition at the Schweinfurth Art Center and is one of the longest running Quilt Art exhibits in the country. Quilts on view in the exhibit express the diversity of styles, techniques and designs in contemporary quilt making. Quilts range from those based on innovative interpretations of traditional block quilts, to pictorial quilts and abstract designs. Techniques include traditional piecing, hand quilting, hand dying, machine thread painting, and appliqué. Admission is $6, free for members, exhibiting quilters & children 12 and under.

Mary Pal's quilt “Memories of Gombe” has been accepted for inclusion in ArtQuilt Elements 2012 to be exhibited at The Wayne Art Center in Pennsylvania. Jurors David McFadden, Sandra Sider and Elizabeth Barton focused on elements of design, techniques and craftsmanship and - from 273 applications and a total of 666 quilt images representing 42 states and 11 countries around the world - chose an exciting collection that represents the professionalism, diversity and expertise evident in this medium.

The joint National SAQA and SDA conference, Identity: Context and Reflection will be held at the Philadelphia Marriot West, Conshohocken, PA, March 30, 31 and April 1, 2012 and the entire conference of more than 200 artists will be invited to attend the ArtQuilt Elements opening on March 30, 2012. Fiber Philadelphia, www.fiberphiladelphia.org a biennial for fiber/textile art, will take place in and around Philadelphia in this same time frame at major institutions and independent venues. It will include numerous exhibitions by renowned international artists as well as a new generation of artists.

As part of the planning for This is a Quilt! SAQA arranged for 50 pieces to become part of the permanent collection at the Michigan State University Museum. SAQA engaged gallerist Michael Solomon to select those pieces. The pieces will go to the Michigan State University Museum at the close of the trunk show travels.

Michael Solomon wrote:
When Kris Sazaki first asked me to be the juror for a collection to go to the Michigan State University Museum, I willingly accepted, thinking it would be a piece of cake. After all, I had owned a fine art gallery in Sacramento for over 10 years, and I had certainly chosen art and artists for many gallery exhibits. I faced a slightly greater challenge with group shows as opposed to solo exhibits, but I felt I had a pretty good grasp of the contemporary painting and sculpture we exhibited. I have also juried shows outside of my gallery, as well as my own photography exhibits.

For the SAQA show, I came to realize that my mandate would limit and challenge me when I faced the prospect of selecting just 50 pieces out of 268 submissions. I have spent many hours in art museums around the world, I am an avid collector, and I have formulated some ideas as to what constitutes "great art." While the quality of art may be subjective, great art is simply that which compels one to look at it, again and again and again. This is the truth, if not a truism. And that's the reason museums full of art that visitors repeatedly visit, contain great art. I can't stop looking at and admiring the art on my walls and pedestals; if I do, I end up replacing it with something better, and then repeat the process.

In jurying this show, I looked for aesthetic design, shapes, color, composition, texture, and subject matter. I am somewhat partial to figurative subject matter, so that may have affected my judgment in some respects. All of the work I viewed exhibited high artistic quality, and I found myself initially choosing way more than my allotment of 50. I then faced the agonizing task of deselecting many pieces I appreciated. In any event, I hope you enjoy my selections.

The Salon des métiers d'arts is coming again this year. If you’ve never been, it’s a must. For the last few years, a group of us have been going to the salon by train which has been a lot of fun. This craft show is one of the best one in the country and it's free.

I have rented a coach-style bus to take us to Montreal, The bus will leave Ottawa – three locations (the Ikea parking lot, Perkins restaurant near St Laurent Shopping centre and Exit #51 on the 417).

We would leave Ottawa (west end location) around 7:30- 8 am (details to be confirmed) and would be at the Place Bonaventure right at opening at 11 am. The return bus would then leave at Montreal at 6pm. For those who are into serious shopping, Place Bonaventure is also only one block from Ste-Catherine Street. It is an excellent time to start the Xmas shopping.

Paul Leger's work to be in "Quilts by Men" Show

Paul was invited to participate in a Quilts by Men show, an exhibition that focuses on quilts designed and created by men. The show is
hosted by the Copper Shade Tree, an American fine craft gallery in Round Top, Texas. The show is held from October 26th to
November 20th, 2011.

After receiving the invitation Paul says "I considered a few designs and decided to make a smaller version of my Around the Block quilt but as the
quilt progressed I was not crazy of the dimensions I had chosen and decided to submit the original quilt and my Pixel quilt."

The show will run in conjunction with The International Quilt Festival in Houston and the opening of Karey Bresenhan’s, Texas Quilt
Museum in La Grange. Limousine tours from Houston to La Grange during the weeks of Market and Festival will be available. The
gallery is a scheduled stop during the tours.

Quilts on the Tay show - special exhibit by SAQA

35 pieces by 21 members of SAQA Central Canada were on display at the Lanark County Quilt Show in Perth the weekend of Aug. 12-14th.

Shown above are works by Catherine Timm, Marie France Gosselin and Elaine Quehl.

It was quite an impressive array of beautiful art, showcasing many different techniques.

Helga Zimmerly coordinated this special exhibit and lots of compliments are due to her. Even though she gave us plenty of advance notice, things did not come together until near the time of the show. And once she got to the high school, where the show took place, to mount the exhibit, the organisers had given her a different space, albeit much better. All her advance planning was therefore useless so she and her helpers, Joanne Komendat and Cathy Price (both from the F Squared group) and Lynne Morin, had to start from scratch.

The result was a feast for the eyes! Apparently, there was great interest from visitors to the show.

Because of sudden change of exhibit space, Helga was able to include all the pieces she had received.

Special thanks to Cathy Breedyk Law who was invaluable in collecting and storing the art untile the show. Special mention needs to be made for "Laurentian Foothills" which intrigued many. Many thanks to Helga, Cathy and Lynne for their tremendous effort!

THREADWORKS at Arthur Child Heritage Centre, Gananoque

The amazing and visually so beautiful THREADWORKS 2010 Exhibition which includes the work of Fibre Artists from across Canada arrives at the ARTHUR CHILD HERITAGE CENTRE for an opening on August 21st and running through September 30th.

THREADWORKS 2010 includes the work of embroiderers, quilters, fibre artists and surface design professionals who have created a breathtaking variety of stitched works around the theme "TREES".

The Call to Entry went out in 2009 for submissions, and several hundred artists sent their beautiful work for Jurying. The approximately 70 selected pieces included in the Threadworks Show were unveiled at the Exhibition Opening at the Wellington County Museum in Fergus in April of 2010.

Since that time, the Exhibition has travelled to venues all across Ontario, offering residents in the receiving communities the opportunity to be exposed to the beauty and sensuous quality of the hand and machine stitch, painted and manipulated fabric and surface design techniques that fascinate the viewer.

Please plan to visit the THREADWORKS Exhibition beginning August 21st and running through September 30th in the Arthur Child Heritage Centre Museum Gallery located on the waterfront in Gananoque.

Call ahead to check the hours of the gallery before driving down and perhaps plan to take a lovely St. Lawrence River tour on the terrific Gananoque Boat Lines while there, with stops at the Boldt Castle on the three hour tour.

Gananoque offers a lovely waterfront collection of small shops, great eateries and walking tours. The Gananoque Inn is a lovely place to stay in case you would like to make a mini-vacation part of your visit! Be sure to take friends, share the news of the exhibition and visit often.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is presenting From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, the firstinternational exhibition devoted to the celebrated French couturier. Gaultier launched his first prêt-à-porter collection in 1976 and founded his own couture house in 1997.The exhibition — which the couturier considers to be a creation in its own right rather than a retrospective – features approximately 140 ensembles, mainly from the designer's couture collections, but also from his prêt-à-porter line, along with their accessories. Created between the early 1970s and 2010, these pieces have, for the most part, never before been exhibited. Karen Goetzinger has been invited by (106) Gallery to show her installation work "A State of Transparency" during ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

"A State of Transparency" is a site specific, on-going work currently consisting of eight ceiling hung panels, ranging in size from 2' x 5' to 10' x 4'.

The ethereal, monochrome panels maintain strong architectural and visionary components and bring to life a city that is most accurately described as the imprint of urban landscapes on individual memory.

1,582 artists from 36 countries and 43 states will show their work in 164 venues within three-square miles of downtown Grand Rapids, Mich.
Each artist will compete for the world’s largest prize for art, which will take place Sept. 21-Oct. 9, 2011.

Pat's statement about her work follows:

" At four I was ‘invited’ by my Grandmother to help make her grandchildren quilts. Mine provided many years of comfort and a closeness to my Grandmother. Fragments still have the same effect. 'A Grandmother's Love' includes a fragment of the original quilt along with Italian cotton organza and a cotton backing. An embroidered outline of my grandmother and myself and the word ‘love’ attach the organza to the original fragment."

Mary Pal's work accepted in to SAQA exhibit: Layers of Memory

Mary's work "Homeless Love" is one of 20 pieces selected from 141 entries in SAQA's Layers of Memory exhibition, designed to represent the human processes of memory.

These works will be exhibited at Mancuso shows, opening at the Mancuso World Quilt Show in 2011 and concluding with the Denver National Quilt Festival in May of 2012.

The Exquisite Corpse: A New Take

The Original Exquisite Corpse

In the 1920s, the Surrealists developed a game that involved creating a collage of words or pictures called the Cadavre Exquis or the Exquisite Corpse.

It was played with several people, each of whom wrote a phrase or drew
an image on a sheet of paper, then folded it to conceal what they created
and passed it on to the next person, who added their contribution.

Only at the end of the game was the whole poem or creation revealed.
The name “Exquisite Corpse” was taken from the first phrase that was generated by this game:
“The exquisite corpse--shall drink--the young wine.”

We invite artists to join in our game and create their own strange but compelling works for our exhibition

Call for Entry
The Rules of This Exquisite Corpse Game

Each artist will select two others with whom to collaborate.
Each collaborative project will be divided into three equal-sized sections:
o Section 1: The head and neck
o Section 2: The torso
o Section 3: The legs and feet
The Exquisite Corpse does not necessarily need to be human or follow human anatomy.

Words such as head, neck, torso and legs may merely be points for metaphoric departure. Or not!

We anticipate that most will be two-dimensional, but some 3D Exquisite Corpses can also be accepted.

Size: this refers to the completed piece including all three sections.
2D works should be sized 10” wide x 36” long (individual sections: 10” x 12”, connecting on the 10”
side).

3D works: Maximum 40” high. Please provide installation details and any special requirements.
Sections need not be created on paper as the Surrealists created them.

These Exquisite Corpses may have a base of fabric, felt or paper, or a combination. However the artists must indicate how the three sections are connected together, and present them as a whole to the jury. They may be affixed to a base of heavy paper.

It is important that players do not see each other’s sections before they complete their own
section. If you work sequentially (i.e. one person does the head, then passes it to the next for the
torso, etc.), you should cover your section with paper or plain fabric when sending it on to the
next player.

Although it is permissible for a group to discuss “connectivity” within the piece as a whole, i.e. something to connect the sections, we encourage participants to honour the rules of the game and play in the spirit of the Surrealists... and above all, to have fun with your entries!

The submissions will be juried to select works that embody a high standard of creative expression and craftsmanship while adhering to the spirit of the original game. Galerie Ouest will be responsible for the final selection of works, framing and display.

November 12: Deadline for receipt of entries and fees
November 21: Notification of acceptance emailed to artists
December 5: Deadline for receipt of framing fee for accepted 2D entries
January 20-29, 2012: Exhibition at Galerie Ouest
January 30-February 26, 2012: Exhibition at the Beaconsfield Library

Fees
There is a non-refundable entry fee of $30 for each submission. This submission may include up to three entries per group, i.e. each group may submit 3 Exquisite Corpses (9 body sections) for the $30 fee.

There is a further fee for all selected 2D entries of approximately $40 to cover the cost of framing.
Successful entrants will be advised of the exact cost at the time of acceptance and be asked to remit this amount by December 5, 2011.

Entry Rules
1. All submissions must adhere to the rules of the game found on the first page.
2. The title of the work and the names of the three co-creators must be legibly marked on the back of each entered piece (or in some other suitable spot for 3D entries).
3. There will be one contact person for the submission, delivery, sales and collection of the group’s work.
Each group may enter up to three works.
4. Any artist may be a member of more than one group.
5. Selected 2D works will be framed in a suitable black frame by Galerie Ouest, either with or without glass,
depending on the nature of the work, at the cost of the co-creators.
6. Galerie Ouest will photograph some or all of the selected works to use for publicity purposes. Your entry constitutes your permission for the Committee to take and so use any such photographs, film, video or other images of your work.

Insurance: It is the responsibility of each group of artists to have appropriate insurance for the work while in transit to and from the exhibition and for the duration of the exhibition.

Sales
Sales will be permitted during the exhibition; however no purchaser may take possession of the work
before the completion of the exhibition at Galerie Ouest. The gallery will charge 20% commission on any sales.

Submitting Your Entry
Each group of co-creators must provide the following:
1. A completed copy of the accompanying Entry Form signed by the designated Contact Artist. If any of the entries are 3D, written instructions regarding any installation details and/or any special requirements must be attached.
2. Nonrefundable $30 fee per entry, up to three entries per group, by cheque or money order made payable to Helena Scheffer.
3. Actual finished but unframed works.
When the nature of the 2D works permit, they may be folded between the sections and mailed in a large envelope, protected by cardboard or rolled and mailed in a tube.
All 3D works must be ready for hanging or installation, with clear written instructions for assembly. All such assembly instructions, hanging rods, stands, or other devices required for exhibition of the work must be included with the work at the time of delivery.
All entry material---the actual works, the entry form (including any assembly instructions), and the entry fee---should be mailed, couriered or delivered to Helena Scheffer, 33 Lakeshore Road, Beaconsfield, Quebec, H9W 4H5.
Deliveries may be made in person on November 12 between 10 am and 5 pm. You may contact Helena directly by phone 514-695-8249 or email helena@galerieouest.ca to obtain driving directions or to make arrangements for alternate delivery in extraordinary circumstances.
All entry materials, however submitted, must be received no later than November 12, 2011.

Those works not selected for the exhibit may be returned to the designated contact person as follows:
You may collect your non-selected work at the home of Helena Scheffer.
Dates for pick-up will be determined later.
Any entries received by mail can be returned by mail if you include appropriate return postage with your entry and if your entry either arrived in a reusable container or if you also include a self-addressed envelope.

Installation Piece by Heather Dubreuil

This week a new medical centre opened in Hudson, Quebec, and yesterday the large art quilt Heather made for the venue was installed.

"It was a thrill to see the two workers erect scaffolding just for the placement of my art quilt. I watched as they carefully measured, installed, and adjusted, and I felt like Christo."

The piece measures about 90" square, and is tentatively titled "It's All That..." It is pinned to a double width of charcoal-gray fibreglass screening, with sleeves sewn in top and bottom.

Plexiglas bars were slipped into the sleeves and screwed into the wall. It has been placed at the top of the stairwell, so it can be seen by visitors as they go up and down the stairs, or wait for the elevator on the second floor. Track lighting will soon be installed to highlight it.

"At times, it felt quite alien in my studio, being so big, and I sometimes lost confidence that I was on the right track. But I like the colour palette and colour gradation, the irregularity of the edges, its modernity and ambiguity, and how it seems to suit the building as a whole. As you mount the stairs, it takes on the appearance of a stained-glass rose window. Two and a half months in the making, and I had good advice from artist friends all along the way."

Taiwan 2012 Exhibit from Patricia Gould

Here is an opportunity for SAQA members to have their work in an exceptional exhibition in Taiwan in 2012. Taiwan Representative, Hsin-Chen Lin, is also the president of TIQE and the first festival she organized in 2009 was wonderful. The exhibition was very well received and the catalog is gorgeous.

The 2012 exhibition will be from August to July and the theme is Moving Water and Rivers, with an emphasis on the life-giving and precious nature of water on the earth and the crucial environmental relationship we have with water.

Water and river are full of life and nutrient: novelty, freshness, and sustainability symbolize a source of vitality, expecting to convey an energetic, broad, and microcosmic angle of view, as well as each kind of life and existence that water and river embrace.

Hsin-Chen is doing a fantastic job of promoting SAQA and is planning to host one of the SAQA Trunk Shows and one of the major traveling exhibitions in a special pavilion at TIQE 2012.

SAQA Booth at OVQG show

Thanks to all of you who volunteered at the SAQA booth at the quilt show for the Ottawa Valley Quilters Guild last weekend, May 6-8. I know some of you had to drive long distances - from Kingston, Pembroke, Montreal ... your support was greatly appreciated! The booth looked terrific with our new banner and the rotating display of fibre art. Volunteers who manned the booth said the Laurentian Foothills display generated a great deal of interest and positive comments from visitors to the show.

Special thanks are in order for some incredibly thoughtful and helpful people, without whom I could never have pulled it all off:

Margaret Dunsmore - who, even after a day of hanging the show, stayed with me on Thursday night to set up the booth and hang the Laurentian Foothills display, providing her ladder, plastic straps, and expertise
Pat Caffery and Karen Goetzinger - who manned the booth solo all day Friday
Sheila Hills - who sat at the Artist-in-Residence booth whenever I needed to visit the SAQA booth or grab a bite of lunch, and who gave me a lift home on Friday!
Marie-France Gosselin and Paul Leger - who assisted with booth take-down and helped lug the bins and quilts out to my car
Debra Sine - who kindly drove the Laurentian Foothills display to the show on Thursday and picked it up on Sunday

A Common Exploration: Art and Artifact Inherit, Inform, Inspired by Cynthia Jackson

Composing With Fibre: Releasing Meaning from Common Threadsby Jo Fitsell and Sara Rockinger

Cynthia Jackson, Jo Fitsell and Sara Rockinger have each been working with textiles and fibre for many years, exploring the many different ways these materials can be used in art.

Although each works on her own, these recent works share something in common by looking back at artifacts, techniques and images and bringing them to life in a new and inspiring way. Three different styles, a common exploration.

The artworks by Cynthia Jackson are inspired by a selection of artifacts in the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum’s collection—including, but not limited to, the machinery, workers, textiles and the building itself.

The chosen objects reflect a collective inheritance, are informed by their historical significance and combine to inspire the art. Jo Fitsell returns to her birth province after twenty-five years of exploring and experimenting with surface design.

She has reinvented the ancient technique of marbling, revived batiking—silk-screened layers of dye—and introduced painted canvas to her sewing machine. Multiple techniques are brought together in a collage, creating rich and emotional textures that describe the artist’s relationship with nature, wonder and self.

Sara Rockinger creates translucent panels with ghostly images of mill workers from the past, simply using stitch as line, and line as stitch, in graceful and thoughtful remembrances.

Hands are really such lovers and when given the freedom to respond to the beauty, warmth and hidden messages embedded in fabric are in full complement with art-making at its most private and intimate.

While each artist brings to this exhibit a distinctive style and personality, together they form a common exploration of the possibilities for creating contemporary artworks with clear links to the past.

SAQA President, Sandra Sider, has founded a new monograph series, The Studio Quilt, in which most issues will focus on individual artists with significant bodies of work.

Six issues are planned for 2011 (available via Amazon.com), with the sixth being a showcase juried by Sandra: State of the Art, 2011, featuring the work of approximately 60 contemporary quilt artists.

Mary Pal is one of the artists chosen for publication in Sandra's book. Her work, Homeless Love, is the one that was selected for publication.

Quilts for Japan Relief from Karen Goetzinger

Karen writes that her church has taken on a project in conjunction with their missionary in Japan. They would like to send twin/single size bed quilts to their national pastors who will be distributing them to the refugees who are being set up in pre-fab housing.

A simple offer has become a very big project! But it is all good and a delight to serve the Japanese people in some small way.

Karen asks that if any SAQA memeber have a new (or very gently used) twin size quilts that they might like to donate to this cause. If so, they could bring the quilts on Thursday.

Fibras Musicales Update

The peripatetic nature of the summer concert series provides us with an opportunity to reach an even larger number of buyers for the fibre art pieces and hopefully expands our audience. Subsequent shows and events in the area will reinforce our position in the market.

The Fibras Musicales exhibition will be mounted for each of the three concerts at St. Christopher’s in Burlington and again for each of the five concerts at Mohawk college. In the interim the works will be on permanent display at the Burlington arts centre.. The following is a tentative schedule of this peripatetic fibre art exhibition.

1. June 11 to June 26 . St Christopher’s Anglican church, Burlington- Three concerts will be held there and the audience will have a chance to view and bid on the works before during and after each concert.
Concerts will be Beethoven Strauss and Brahms Estimated attendance 3000- there may be some overlap between people who attend more than one concert in the series

2. June 26 to July 14 Burlington Art center
This is a public gallery and expected attendance over the period is estimated at 500-1000 individuals over this time frame. The works will be on constant display

3. July 14 to August 11 Mohawk College
The works will be on display at each concert in a new foyer area next to the concert hall. During this period there will be 5 concerts with an attendance of 1000 at each concert.( subscriber overlap) Programs will include Chopin, Sibelius, Russian Romantics, Carmen arias and the special Spanish night of August 11.

4. The final tour date and closing bid concert at the Royal Botanical Gardens concert on August 14.
The works will be on a special internet website as well as the Brott festival website.

We are building special transport and holding cases to store the works between concerts at St. John’s and Mohawk. Secure storage is available for such units at these sites.

I have attached a concert / exhibition schedule which still may change.. However if you will be in the area and want tickets to a concert let me know. I will have some tickets available for some concerts

May 1, 2011 - we need to have received some picture and bio data etc so we can start making labels etc.

If you have pictures of completed projects earlier please send them as we will try and use them in brochures and will paste them to web site as soon as received.

I must have the real article in my hands by June 1 if we are to complete web site photos catalogue etc.However please do not ship before May 15 as I will not be ready to receive them. I finish the Halton Quilt exhibition at the Royal Botanical Gardens on May 15.

Thank you once again for your participation in what is becoming a somewhat different kind of art show. Our association with classical symphonic music establishes a standard. At the same time we are bringing fibre art to people who should be interested in it as art. This is a first effort and I appreciate your courage and support.

2011 Venues for Surfaces

“SURFACES” is a collection of 20 art quilts each inspired by a photograph: it could be a section of a wall, a floor, pavement, a fence, a tree trunk, even footprints in the sand that pulls me in and keeps me up at night until I’ve figured out how to make these living bits of abstract art mine. For me art is always just a glance away, and this collection is my attempt to prove it.

Creating Fabric with Dyes and Paints

We would love to have you as a part of the great network of friends sharing in the exploration of surface design using dyes and pigments! Come play!

Bethany Garner, Instructor Creating Fabric with Dyes and Paints

Join us for this fun-filled, two weekend course and explore the world of creating original fabric using Low Immersion Dyeing and direct dye application techniques and painting/printing with pigments including water based, metallic and textured paints.

Discover the beauty of Japanese Shibori technique, discharge printing and dyeing, and the use of natural and applied resist as new ways to add fabric that is unique and original to your Art Quilts and garment designs. Play with sun-printing and the development of surface texture to enhance your quilt design. Individual journals of samples will be developed during the course, with clear instruction/lab sheets to ensure confidence in working with these new techniques for the future. In the second weekend, student will develop an exhibition piece including their newly created fabrics and explore stitching, decorating with stamps, stencils and finishing techniques. ($30 materials fee payable to the instructor at start of course).

Date of show: January 14^th to February 25^th, 2012

Exhibit Description: The Greenwood Gallery will be the first stop for this juried traveling exhibition of 25 pieces of textile art. This is an opportunity for SAQA members living in Canada to promote their textile art as well as providing opportunities to raise awareness and interest in the organization.

Entry Guidelines:

A single entry fee of $35. You may submit a maximum of 2 entries. Entries must be 20" x 24". Orientation may be vertical or horizontal.
3-D, free-standing works will NOT be accepted.
Work in hard frames or on stretcher frames will be accepted.
Artwork must meet the SAQA definition of an art quilt: a contemporary artwork exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the whole range of visual arts: painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design, asssemblage and sculpture, which retains, through materials or technique, a clear relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descends.
Artwork must be ready to hang. Special instructions with regard to hanging will be sent to each artist whose work is accepted.
Artists are responsible for shipping and insurance to a location in Ottawa. Details will be provided to artists whose work is accepted. (See Prospectus for further details.)
Artwork will be returned after the traveling show ends in Spring 2014.

Sharon Godwin Director at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery

Sharon has been at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery for 30 years being the Director since 1988. She loves to take the gallery outside its walls into the community and has been involved in various projects that do just that. Her volunteer/community experience in the Thunder Bay Area includes being the Founding Member/Treasurer of the Arts and Heritage Alliance, President of the Thunder Bay Children’s Festival, Member of Public Art Committee, and the Treasurer of Community Arts and Heritage Education Project. She has also worked provincially as a Member of the Board of Directors, Ontario Association of Art Galleries and the Chair of the Northern Relocation Program Art Committee. Sharon has a BA from Guelph University in visual arts/art history and a Bachelor of Education from Lakehead University in visual arts/history, Thunder Bay Ont.

Yvonne Wiegers Artist, Professor of Visual Art at Heritage College

Yvonne has spent more than 15 years in the visual arts field in various roles including practicing artist, arts educator, and arts administrator. Yvonne’s studio practice – as a mixed media sculptor, painter, photographer, and installation artist – currently focuses on issues related to accumulation and identity. Her works have been exhibited throughout Canada as well as in the US, Russia and Sri Lanka. As an arts educator, she has taught at the university, college and secondary school levels both in Canada and overseas. Yvonne has also held senior leadership positions in both non-governmental arts organizations and in educational institutions. She is past president of CARFAC. Yvonne holds a BA in Fine Art from the University of Guelph and an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Calgary.

Lyndal Osborne Artist, Professor Emeritus in Department of Art and Design, University of Alberta

Lyndal Osborne has worked in a wide range of media including print, drawing, sculpture and installation. In 1971 she studied for an MFA at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. Currently she is Professor Emeritus after a 33 year career teaching at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. Her work has been exhibited extensively across Canada, Europe and Asia, and she has received numerous awards and grants for her creative research. She is represented in many private and public collections including the National Gallery of Canada. Osborne’s sculptures and installations have developed an individual approach that utilizes found organisms for subject matter. and recycled material which she alters through the application of color, manipulating their original shape, and/or by placing the objects in new contexts so that they develop new metaphorical meaning. In her recent work Osborne has focused on an examination of the issues of genetically modified organic subject matter. Recent exhibitions include Dunlop Gallery, Regina 2010, Penticton Art Gallery, 2009, Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, 2008, Canadian Clay and Glass Museum, Kitchener, 2008

Prospectus

Eligibility:

Quilt artists must be Canadian residents, and members of SAQA.
Dimensions of the work when finished must be 20" x 24".
All entries must have been completed after December 2008.
Each piece must be ready for hanging. Special instructions in regards to hanging will be sent to the artists whose work is accepted.

Preparation of digital images and entry forms:

Save your digital images at 300 dpi. Image size should be a maximum of 6" on the longest side (1800 pixels).
Image format must be JPEG and must be saved to a CD disc. DVD discs will not be accepted.
Format each image with a file name without spaces and capitalization as follows: first three letters of your first name, followed by your last name, then the number of the image as it corresponds to the image list on the Synthesis entry form. For the detail image add "dtl" after the image number. Example: Jane Smith would label her images as jansmith01.jpg; and jansmith02.jpg. Her detail shots would be labelled jansmith01dtl.jpg; and jansmith02dtl.jpg.
Create a Word document with the entry information below. Save that document to the disc, using the first three letters of your first name, followed by your last name, underscore entry (e.g. jansmith_entry.doc).
Label both the CD and the CD case with your full name.

Submission of entry:

DO NOT mail actual artwork.
Mail with delivery confirmation receipt so that you can track delivery. No notification of arrival will be sent by SAQA Canada.

A complete submission packet will include:

a hard copy of the completed entry form
the CD in a case with your jpg images properly sized and labelled and saved to the CD along with the saved Word document of your entry form
a $35 entry fee in cheque form made out to Mary Pal and
a SASE with two regular stamps if you would like your CD returned

Conditions:

All work will be for sale either directly with the artist or through the hosting venues who may charge a commission from 25% up to 50%.

Great news! SAQA Central Canada has been invited by the Ottawa Valley Quilters Guild to have a booth at their 2011 quilt show at the RA Centre May 7-9th. Here's a great opportunity to show the world what we do!

We would love some help manning the booth - admission to the show is free for volunteers on the day of your shift. There will be membership brochures, samples of SAQA publications, and we would love to have small samples of your work if you would like to exhibit them (along with your business cards if you are interested in selling).

If you, or you and a friend, would like to man the booth, please contact me by email and I will add your name to the schedule. I can man the booth all day Friday, but could sure use some help on Saturday and Sunday, between 10 am and 5 pm.

As well, we have been given permission to exhibit the Anne Savage panels "Laurentian Foothills" but would need someone to pick it up at Canada Beading Supply on Thursday afternoon to bring to the RA Centre, and then pick it up on Sunday afternoon at 4 pm, and return to Canada Beading Supply at a convenient time. Anyone?

She is also having an Exhibition of her work at The Lambton Heritage Museum, near Grand Bend, Ontario during July and August of this year.

She is also involved with the Ailsa Craig Quilt Festival and is writing the blog for that; she says it is not an easy thing to do sometimes!

Fibras Musicales Project update
First of all Thank You for your support for this first
“Fibrations” project. Fibras Musicales to be held in conjunction
with the Brott Festival. The critical components of the project are
in place.

So........Vamos Muchachos........... letʼs go.

The well known Burlington Art center (http://www.thebac.ca/) has
agreed to permit us to show the works of this project at the BAC
from June 24 to July 18, 2011. People may see the works and bid
on them there and collect information about the artists. Entrance
to the BAC is free ( parking at $ 1.00/hr) so spread the word. I
am working on a second venue for July 20 to August 11.

Funding for the website and the brochure is not confirmed yet.

A revised schedule is below. Please note modified dates.

The Brott Festival marketing machine starts in May .The sooner I
can get confirmations and pictures from the artists the better. This
event will get a wide sweep across southern Ontario .

Works Specifications:
The concept is that the fibre works are inspired by listening
to the music that will be played the night of the August 11, 2011
concert; Lalo’s ’ Symphonie Espagnole; Ravel’s Bolero; De
Falla’s Three cornered Hat. At this point we plan to show giant
slides of the works during the concert probably during the Bolero
portion.

Final Submission Guidelines: Revised March 3,2011.

1. Donations must be Minimum 12 inches on any one side and
a maximum of 36 inches on any one side. FYI the BAC site lends
itself to 30 inches high by 18 inches wide. This is a change from
the original notification because the gallery venues lend
themselves to larger pieces than we could display only in the
smaller foyer of the concert hall. The newly built foyer will lend
itself to larger works as well. Also we do not have to move the
works as often as thought.

2. Only two works per artist will be accepted.

3. Please forward digital copies of the work by e mail as soon as
these are ready. This will help us plan layouts.

4. ALL artwork donated must be ready to hang. If artwork not
otherwise mounted, a sleeve or other method of hanging must
be attached. Artwork on stretchers should have hooks and wire
attached. We will supply hanging rods etc. but the works must
have a sleeve or hanging straps.

5. All donations must have label with title (or "untitled") and
artist's name clearly written. Label should be affixed to the back
of the work. Professional gallery labels will be made for the
BAC venue.

6. Each artist is asked to prepare a 25 word description of this
work that should include materials/techniques to help bidders
understand what the image on the website represents. Artists
should also submit a 25 word bio on types of work available
and contact information. All of this should be sent as digital e
mail so that it can easily be transferred to labels and printing
press. This information can be sent prior to shipping the work
itself. Please send this information as soon as possible to
facilitate preparation of the exhibition.

7. Images will not be posted until the work is received.

8. Please do not use peanuts, confetti, shredded paper, or
padded envelopes filled with linty fuzz - all these things make a
mess when opening the package and the confetti and fuzzy
stuff sticks to the quilts.

9. Please mail your donation with a tracking number or prestamped/
addressed postcard to let you know it arrived. Auction
coordinator will endeavor to email donor when work arrives.

Project description:
Fibre artists are requested to donate small quilt works (min height or width 12 inch x
max h/w 36 inch ) on the theme of specific pieces of music being played at a “Spanish
Night” symphonic concert. (Ravelʼs Bolero, Laloʼs Symphony Espagnole, Fallaʼs Three
Cornered Hat).
All proceeds from sale of works will go to support apprentice musicians in this unique
symphony orchestra. There are several distinct benefits for the fibre artists who donate
work. Each artist will receive a charitable donation tax receipt for sale price of work.
They will receive online and print publicity for their submission and for their website.
Artists may also receive tickets to the Spanish night concert or to alternate concerts
within the festival.. (Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville).

B. J. Reid's piece called 'One Female at a Time' will be on display in a group exhibition at the United Nations Building in Geneva, Switzerland from March 1 - 25, 2011. The theme for the challenge was Women - Peace and Security. The official opening for the show is March 8th, the International Day of Women.

Peace and security in women’s lives have been issues for me for quite some time. All forms of physical and mental abuse, whether inflicted by family, friend or invader, are truly abhorrent. When given to women, the actions behind the words quilted here (beginning with ‘love’, revealing a message and ending with ‘equality’) bring peace to women keeping them safe and secure – one female at a time.
One woman is vulnerable, but the voices of many women will be heard.

One of our members, Dwayne Wanner, is organizing a fibre art exhibition and auction, and is inviting fibre artists to participate if this opportunity is of interest to you. He does need your response by Feb. 25th so he can proceed to work on obtaining funding for this initiative.
This information sheet is about an upcoming Call for Entry for a fibre art exhibition Fibrations: Fibre Music Art that has been proposed for the Brott Music Festival http://www.brottmusic.com/ in August.
Fibre artists are requested to donate small quilt works (min height or width 12 inch x max h/w 24 inch ) on the theme of specific pieces of music being played at a “Spanish Night” symphonic concert:
Ravel’s Bolero
Lalo’s Symphony Espagnole
Falla’s Three Cornered Hat.
The selection will be juried though jurors have not yet been selected. All proceeds from sale of works will go to support apprentice musicians in this unique symphony orchestra. There are several distinct benefits for the fibre artists who donate work. Each artist will receive a charitable donation tax receipt for sale price of work. They will receive online and print publicity for their submission and for their website. Artists may also receive tickets to the Spanish night concert or to alternate concerts within the festival.. (Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville).
April 1, 2011: Deadline for submission of electronic version of the artwork(s)
July 15, 2011: Deadline for delivery of work(s) to Burlington
August 15, 2011: Final bidding will occur on evening of the concert
Fibre/quilt works will be displayed on a website in April along with photographs of artists and other works by same artists. The works in the exhibition will be offered for sale in a live and online auction.
All donated works will be exhibited in the foyer of the MacIntyre concert hall the night of the concert and will be presented in slide format during the orchestral performance. The exhibition will be promoted by the orchestra marketing program as well as a separate show marketing program. It may be possible to have a physical exhibition of the pieces in the foyer of the concert hall for a week prior to the concert. As well, some pieces will be shown at earlier concerts and other locations in the concert series (June through August). Artists may act as docents for the Foyer exhibition.

Elaine Quehl to teach at Haliburton this Summer

Elaine Quehl will be teaching two week-long classes at the Haliburton School of the Arts (Fleming College) this summer: (Quilting: The Art Quilt) during the last week of July, and a new class all about thread (Threads: Uncommon and Unforgettable) the first week of August. Detailed class descriptions can be obtained by clicking on the class names above. Registration begins March 1. The village of Haliburton (located north of Toronto in the Muskokas) just buzzes with creativity during the summer months with a wide range of classes running during the Summer School. Haliburton School of the Arts is part of Sir Sanford Fleming College, so you can actually obtain college credits toward a diploma while taking these classes.

Three Important Questions from SAQA

Well, I know that SAQA works hard to be the very best organization it can be for its members. But want to know how MUCH they care? I just got a call from our new president, Sandra Sider, and it turns out she is making a personal phone call to every single SAQA rep around the world to get their region's feedback on three important questions. Are you ready? Here they are:

What is SAQA not doing that it should be doing?
What are things SAQA is doing that it could do better?
Is there anything SAQA is doing that it should not be doing?

Lynne and Cathy will be collecting your opinions over the next six weeks, so if you have some ready answers to those questions, please email them straight away to one or both of your co-reps. That will save them having to email you later. We would really like everyone to weigh in on this as it will determine what goes into SAQA's Five-Year Plan. Here's your chance to shape SAQA into the best possible organization for you!

We are delighted to report that Cathy Breedyk Law is the new SAQA co-representative for the Central Canada Region! Cathy brings a lot of knowledge and enthusiasm to the table, and we know she will do a great deal to promote SAQA throughout our area.

Many of you will already know Cathy as the gracious hostess of our Parlour Meetings in Perth. If you don't know her, there is a wonderful description of her background and interests here on the SAQA website.

Congratulations on this appointment, Cathy! We're all looking forward to working with you!

February Central Canada Parlour Meeting

For all who can make it to Perth, our next Parlour meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 17. Being ever-prepared Canadians, in case of a snowstorm, we are also scheduling a "Snow Day" for the following week, Thurs., Feb. 24, so on the 17th, if the weather looks iffy, check the blog before you leave home! So:

Please email Cathy if you plan to attend, and if you need directions.
Bring along a potluck contribution for our lunch break, please, and mug and mug bag if you have one.
Our main theme is Marketing. Bring along samples of what you use to market yourself as an artist: business cards, brochures, rack cards, etc., and if you have a good inventory of these, bring about 25 or so, to distribute to the group. We will also be discussing web design, so bring along the names of your software programs and other useful tools.
Finally, please bring along a piece you've been working on, or finished, for our Creative Buffet.

Coffee, chitchat and Creative Buffet begin at 10 am. The meeting begins at 10:30 and we finish by 2:00 pm to avoid rush hour issues for the folks who travel long distances.

Looking forward to our first meeting of 2011!

Would You Like to be a SAQA Rep?

I am delighted to report to our group that I have been appointed to the SAQA Board of Directors. This is a huge honour and I will do my best to represent this amazing organization internationally, to the best of my ability.

This does, however, mean that we will need another co-rep to help keep our region growing and active. It's a fun job, with the main responsibilities being to promote the mission and goals of SAQA, be a resource for regional members, recruit new members, and organize and attend some regional meetings. I would be happy to provide more details to anyone who is interested in the position. Please email me and we will take it from there!

For those who are interested, Karen can order copies of the book she put together when curating Synthesis I. She writes:

It is an expensive little thing coming to about $28 with shipping. I think though that if we order 10 or more there is a bit of a discount, like 10 or 15%. I have had a couple orders already that have been placed and filled. Interested people would have to order through me since the book is on my computer, that is the only way to upload it to Apple. But again, if we can get 10 or more to order we might get a small discount.

A propos of our discussion at the last Parlour meeting, here is an opportunity for you to send a small sampling of what you do out there into the universe. Guaranteed acceptance! How can you not? It should be in the mail by mid-January to arrive in California by January 21st.

Help promote the art quilt

Something YOU can do to help promote the art quilt as art is to create an outstanding piece for the 2011-12 SAQA trunk show entitled "THIS is a Quilt." Why should you do this?

1. It's a teaching tool. The trunks can be mailed to any group wanting to exhibit the variety of quilts made by SAQA members. This includes not only SAQA regional groups but also regular art groups and quilt guilds. We will be including suggestions for a variety of art critique exercises that groups can do to learn about art quilts and have fun with the pieces.

2. 50 of the pieces will be donated to the Kresge Art Museum at Michigan State University to become part of their permanent collection.The pieces will be selected by fine art gallery owner Michael Solomon of Solomon-Dubnick Gallery.

3. If you are unable to create a piece, would you be willing spread the word by hosting a viewing party to create a larger audience for the art quilt?
